ABOUT THE SOUNDSYSTEM

A traditional reggae Sound System is usually a group that consists of the Selector (DJ), the MC ("Mic Chatter"), the Engineer, and so on. Sound systems perform on stage, and also have battles, called Sound Clashes.

The Bluefields SoundSystem is a little different, in that no one man in Bluefields could afford to be in one of those roles, much less records, or equipment. This is where we come in, bringing in the equipment, the know-how, and setting it all up in Bluefields in the form of a studio.

The SoundSystem is for the benefit of all of Bluefields, and will be something tangible that all the people can call their own. We're not only interested in exporting talent from Bluefields, we're here to bring attention to Bluefields.  To help solidify a sense of identity by exposing the world to their rich culture and extraordinary and overlooked talents.

Kali Boom and the Bluefields SoundSystem will kick it off with a CD/DVD combo to showcase Kali Boom's wide range of skills. You will be witnessing soulful reggae, bumpin’ Spanish Reggaeton, booty shaking dancehall, and just about everything tropical from Soca to Maypole, all braided together into cutthroat rhymes and rhythms. The album will follow a narrative thread, drawing from Kali’s personal experiences, telling the story of his hometown of Bluefields.

With the SoundSystem set up, we will be recording many other local artists, and producing a mixtape series to bring their diverse sounds here to the U.S. and worldwide.

This is only the beginning for the SoundSystem. In the near future, we are planning to build resources that will foster the development of local artists, and work with community organizations and the university to provide an educational outlet in which the local youth and people can develop and train, both musically and artistically.
